Opening your Mail application can sometimes be a daunting task. Last chance deals, online sales, new releases, dream vacations, ChristianMingle.com spam (thanks to friends who think they're reeeeeal funny *coughBRETTcough*) and random questions all pile up in an orderly line. Monday mornings are infamous for accumulating an unnecessary amount of these. As I embarked on my organizing adventure a few weeks ago, I came across one with a subject that was a little out of the ordinary. "Encouragement for your Monday morning" stuck out like a sore thumb. The email read as follows:

Hey friends,

My name is Katie, and I semi-recently stopped by the HE>i store with my team from Invisible Children while we were on our national tour. I just wanted send you a quick line of encouragement saying how cool it was to get to see your shop and the positive influence you are having on your community. It's awesome to see the Lord bless the simple mission to become less while making more of Christ.

The graphic I included is meant for nothing more than your enjoyment. It is inspired by my desire to go back to Hawaii for a more permanent stay, but my knowledge that in my daily pursuit of the Lord is where I'll find true delight.

Keep up the great work and know that you are an encouragement and light in this world.

Good friend and great guy, Mark Button, recently returned home after spending a few weeks in Africa. He and his son Jack went to help at an HIV/AIDS orphanage that they have been working closely with. Mark came in and got geared up before flying out and was radiating with excitement for what's been going on over there. He stopped in the other day and said the trip was phenomenal. He was at somewhat of a loss for words and was still comprehending all that went on during the weeks spent there. In 1871, Horatio Spafford, a prosperous lawyer and devout Presbyterian church elder and his wife, Anna, were living comfortably with their four young daughters in Chicago. In that year the great fire broke out and devastated the entire city. Two years later the family decided to vacation with friends in Europe. At the last moment Horatio was detained by business, and Anna and the girls went on ahead, sailing on the ocean liner S.S. Ville de Havre. On November 21, 1873, the liner was rammed amid ship by a British vessel and sank within minutes. Anna was picked up unconscious on a floating spar, but the four children had drowned.

After receiving Anna's telegram, Horatio immediately left Chicago to bring his wife home. On the Atlantic crossing, the captain of his ship called Horatio to his cabin to tell him that they were passing over the spot where his four daughters had perished. It was there that he penned these words;

"When peace like a river, attendeth my way;

When sorrows like sea billows roll;

Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say,

It is well, it is well with my soul."

He later wrote to Rachel, his wife's half-sister, "On Thursday last we passed over the spot where she went down, in mid-ocean, the waters three miles deep. But I do not think of our dear ones there. They are safe, folded, the dear lambs."

Horatio wrote this hymn, still sung today, as he passed over their watery grave.

Graduation season is in full swing and in Hawaii that means buying/making tons of leis. Thankfully we know a plumeria whiz named Jim Little (father to the world famous shore break photographer, Clark Little). Jim is the brain behind 'Jim Little Nursery & Farms' above the Kawailoa dump on the North Shore of Oahu. Jimbo let us in to do a quick flower raid this morning before the sun got too scorching. Our shop temporarily turned into a lei stand (similar to the ones at the Honolulu airport) for the day. After a few hours and more than a few pricks from the massive lei needles, we had 32 fresh plumeria leis in the bag. Some very fortunate seniors will be smelling quite nice at Kahuku's graduation tonight. Congrats class of 2011!

John Mark McMillan's heartfelt story behind the popular song "How He Loves". A friend shared this with me a while back and I clearly remember trying to fight back tears in a Starbucks in downtown DC. I didn't succeed. This is beautiful.

He recently re-released The Medicine and it's been a breath of fresh air. Go get it!
